Cross Cultural Parenting Faux Pax #1

I bought a rubbermaid tote for the baby bargains I’ve been finding. Including these adorable pajamas with monkeys on them.

I labeled the bin “Little Monkey” and Croi thought it was pretty cute. We’ve been calling our unknown little one “Little Monkey” ever since.

Until two of Croi’s students (she is a teacher) got into a fight that started when one (Hispanic boy) called the other (African American boy) an ape.

And, we thought, Uh-oh. Those words have pretty historic terrible connotations. That being two white women we just NEVER thought of. But, considering the population of our city, odds are high that we will have a non-white child. That we certainly can’t refer to as monkey.

Imagine the look of horror on a social worker’s face.

In my defense, we were thinking of a safari themed nursery 😉

Shaking my head, and off to find a new nickname….

  1. Mama Drama says:

Hmmm…”my fuzzy armadillo” sounds inclusive…..but I am sure the Society for the Protection of the Armadillo would take issue with that, too. It is so hard NOT to offend someone these days.

  2. Mama Drama is right… there are going to be issues with every choice. Just go with what feels/sounds right to you. Good luck!
